General Information

Overview

The Master of Financial Technologies develops your awareness of rapid technological changes and the impact this has on financial services and FinTech start-ups. Our course focuses on areas such as the frontiers in FinTech, strategic application and commercialisation of blockchain. You’ll examine real-world challenges, undertake applied projects, and regularly engage with Australian and international guest speakers.

Study structure

To qualify for the award of Master of Financial Technologies, students must complete 16 units of study (200 credit points) comprising of:

  • 4 foundation units (50 credit points)
  • 8 core units (100 credit points)
  • 4 units comprising one specialisation or four (4) elective units (50 credit points)
  • Full-time study: 100 credit points/eight standard units of study per year

  • Part-time study: 50 credit points/four standard units of study per year

  • One credit point is equivalent to one hour of study per week per semester (including contact hours and private study)

Aims and objectives

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • apply coherent and advanced knowledge of technology concepts in diverse financial services contexts and applications using critical thinking
  • apply problem-solving, design and decision-making methodologies to identify and provide innovative solutions to complex problems with intellectual independence
  • communicate proficiently in professional practice to a variety of audiences and function as an effective member or leader of a diverse team within project
  • demonstrate professionalism, integrity, ethical conduct, professional accountability and an awareness of professional practices in a FinTech environment and sustainable context
  • apply fundamentals to the analysis, design and operation of a financial services business model using innovative emerging technologies and tools
  • reflect on and take responsibility for their own learning and self-management processes
  • apply knowledge of research principles and methods to plan and execute a piece of research with some independence.

On completion of the course, students’ career opportunities in business and management will be enhanced. Students will graduate with the skills to lead their organisation towards success, or further their studies in the field.

Professional recognition

Master of Finance is recognised under the CFA Institute Affiliated University. The course covers at least 70% of all three topic levels of the CFA program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK) placing emphasis on the CFA Institute Codes of Ethics and Standards of Practice. This recognition signals to students, employers and the marketplace that that Swinburne’s curriculum is closely tied to professional practice and is well suited to preparing you for employment in the finance and investment industry, and for sitting the CFA examination. Students in the Master of Finance may be eligible for CFA Program Student Scholarships.

Maximum Academic Credit

The maximum level of credit that can be granted for the Master of Marketing is 100 credit points (normally 8 units). [Column 2]
