What is a double degree?

A double degree allows you to study two bachelor degrees at the same time and graduate with two qualifications in a shorter timeframe than if you studied each degree separately.

How long does a double degree take?

While the exact duration can depend on the combination of degrees you choose, most double degrees take:

  • one additional year compared to a single degree
  • a shorter timeframe than completing two separate degrees back-to-back.

Why study a double degree?

Our double degrees are designed to combine complementary study areas so you can graduate with a competitive edge across multiple industries.

This path is ideal if you’re interested in careers that sit at the intersection of two disciplines, such as:

  • Commercial Lawyer or Financial Analyst (business and law)
  • Forensic Psychologist or Crime Analyst (psychology and criminology)
  • Civil Engineer or Innovation Lead (engineering and applied innovation)
  • Food Technologist or Health Policy Advisor (health and science)

Can I transfer to a double degree after starting a single degree?

In many cases, yes. If you’re already studying at Swinburne, you can apply to add a second degree to your current course. Your application will be formally assessed against the entry requirements for both degrees.

This means you’ll need to meet any specific prerequisites for the new degree you’re applying for (e.g. mathematics requirements for engineering degrees).

To be considered for a double degree, you’ll need to apply via the application portal for local students or international students.

Frequently asked questions

Some double degrees offer part-time and online options, but availability can depend on the degree combination.

For more information, view the course page of your chosen study option or search our online courses.

No. When you study a double degree, the two degrees are blended into a single course structure. You’ll take units from both degrees alongside each other as you progress, rather than completing one degree and then the other.

There are limits on how many units you can study each semester, so while some units may be shared, completing a double degree typically takes just one year longer than a single degree.

In most cases, yes. Students can usually exit a double degree and continue with a single degree, provided they meet course rules and their academic progress is tracking well.

However, please note that all students will need to submit an application to be formally assessed by the admissions team – this is a standard process that is generally straightforward.

It’s a good idea to speak with your course coordinator or book a one-on-one with our friendly team for advice.
