About the scholarship
The Judith Kinnear Student Travel Scholarship supports a postgraduate student in a Masters degree (by Research) or Doctorate degree (PhD) within Swinburne’s School of Engineering or School of Science, Computing and Emerging Technologies.
Named after Dr Judith Kinnear, a Swinburne alum who became the first woman to lead a New Zealand university, the scholarship honors her pioneering career in higher education.
What's included
The scholarship covers travel expenses related to academic or professional development (e.g. attending conferences, visiting research institutes or meeting potential business or research collaborators).
The scholarship payment will be made as a reimbursement when original receipts are presented and submitted to the university, for example conference registration, flight and/or accommodation bookings.
Eligibility and selection criteria
Applicants must be undertaking travel in the year the scholarship is awarded.
Applicants must be:
- a continuing second year and above Swinburne student in Semester 1, 2027
- enrolled full-time in a Masters (by Research) or PhD in the School of Science, Computing and Emerging Technologies or School of Engineering.
Applicants must:
- demonstrate that they have limited or no access to funding for their travel (i.e. without the funding, they will not be able to undertake the travel)
- provide evidence of travel related to academic and professional development, such as attending conferences, visiting research institutes, or meeting potential business or research collaborators.
This scholarship is related to the following study areas:

Personal statement
Submit a personal statement of up to 500 words addressing:
- how attending a 'significant career-impacting international event' will benefit them professionally and impact their career.
Breakdown of costs
Provide an estimated breakdown of costs (e.g. conference registration, flights and accommodation).
