Overview

This unit prepares students to implement and evaluate evidence-based individual and group interventions to support pre-school, primary, secondary, and tertiary students with a range of psychological, learning, social-emotional, and mental health issues. Learning theories and Positive Behaviour Support strategies will be taught, and programs to support students with a range of learning disorders, disabilities, and school engagement needs will be a feature of this unit. Furthermore, students will gain skills in applying positive psychology approaches to individual, whole school, and system-wide interventions to improve multi-level wellbeing and behaviour and learn how to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams both within and outside the school context.

Unit learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  1. Implement individual and group interventions to support the psychological, learning, behavioural, and wellbeing needs of students in educational settings
  2. Design evidence-based strategies to support the educational and developmental outcomes of students with a range of learning disorders, disabilities and school engagement needs
  3. Apply positive psychology approaches to individual, whole school and system-wide interventions
  4. Evaluate intervention effectiveness using single-case and multiple-case design methods
  5. Develop cultural competency in delivering interventions that are responsive to the needs of students, schools, families, and communities, and that are considerate of their socio-ecological systems
