Commercial Pilot Licence Practicum 1
Overview
To consolidate the procedural aspects of cross country flight and instruct the student in visual night flying. The student will also receive instruction on night visual departure, en-route and approach procedures. Additionally, the student will undertake aircraft upset prevention and recovery training. A significant portion of command flight time will be accrued as part of this unit.

Unit learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
- Demonstrate proficiency in planning and executing day flights under the VFR flight rules or night flights under the NVFR considering all legal operational requirements
- Conduct safe night traffic pattern operations in accordance with the specified procedures and approved techniques to CAE OAA solo standard in normal and abnormal situations
- Conduct upset prevention and flight recovery
- Conduct basic IFR en-route procedures including sector entries and holding patterns
- Demonstrate progressive advancement of pilot in command responsibilities and accountability on cross country flights with or without passengers
- Apply skills and knowledge to conduct a cross country flight in Australian airspace

Hurdle
To receive a COMP (Pass) grade for this unit, students must meet BOTH requirements below;
i. Complete all Syllabus hours to at least the required level of competency
ii. Complete the total hour requirement of the Practicum, which includes Solo (60 hrs), Simulator (4 hrs), dual hours (11.8 hours), UPRT (5 hrs), and the solo night flight assessment.
Content
11.8 hours dual instruction, 60 hours solo flight time and 4 hours of simulator instruction encompassing Pilot in command time, night navigation and night circuit training.
5 hours of Upset Prevention and Recovery Training (UPRT) in an American Champion Aircraft Corporation Super Decathlon (8KCAB). The 8KCAB has conventional landing gear, also known as a tailwheel undercarriage. Note. Students will not receive a tailwheel undercarriage design feature endorsement on their CASR Part 61 flight crew licence on completion of UPRT.
25.5 hours of pre-flight and post-flight briefing for all dual, solo and simulator training sequences.
