Nursing Children and Young People
Overview
From a strengths-based approach, this unit will educate the student about the care of children, young people and families. The emphasis will be on promoting health and preventing illness; holistic assessment; and the nurse’s role in supporting families during normal pregnancy and early child development. Students will cover the emergency management of infants and children presenting acutely unwell and paediatric medication management.

Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
- Explain the nurse’s role in pregnancy and the newborn period
- Summarise nursing care for infants, children and young people with selected acute presentations
- Differentiate the developmental stages of a child and discuss various strength-based nursing approaches to family centred care
- Analyse immunisation status and adhere to the national immunisation schedule for infants and young people
- Explore health promotion in the prevention of illness in children and young people
- Perform safe calculation and delivery of paediatric and adolescent medications

Hurdle
As the minimum requirements of assessment to pass a unit and meet all ULOs to a minimum standard, an undergraduate student must have achieved:
- You must gain an aggregate mark of 50% or more. Conceded passes are not recognised by the Australian Nursing & Midwifery Accreditation Council therefore conceded passes will not be granted
- Tutorials and simulation have an 80% attendance requirement as per the Australian Nursing & Midwifery Accreditation Council
