Overview

From a strengths-based approach, students will explore the nursing care of infants, children, young people and their families. The emphasis will be on promoting health and preventing illness; holistic assessment; and the nurse’s role in supporting families during pregnancy, early childhood and adolescent development. Students will cover the nursing management of infants, children and young people presenting acutely unwell including the nursing administration and management of paediatric medication.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Explain the nurse’s role in pregnancy and the newborn period
  • Summarise nursing care for infants, children and young people with selected acute presentations
  • Differentiate the developmental stages of a child and discuss various strength-based nursing approaches to family centred care
  • Analyse immunisation status and adhere to the national immunisation schedule for infants and young people
  • Explore health promotion in the prevention of illness in children and young people
  • Perform safe calculation and delivery of paediatric and adolescent medications
