Aims and objectives
This unit will explore client-centred medical nutrition therapy, incorporating topics and activities focussed on both the management of disease through dietary changes and improving health and wellbeing. It will focus on the management of chronic conditions and working with an ageing population, and will explore dietary management of some acute conditions. This unit will also provide students with practical food preparation experience utilising the teaching kitchen where they will develop strategies and prepare foods in line with their medical nutrition therapy recommendations.
Unit Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
1. Evaluate and apply various nutrition screening tools
2.Collect and interpret nutrition assessment and malnutrition screening data to determine the nutrition status of healthy individuals and those with selected acute and chronic medical conditions
3. Make nutrition diagnoses and develop client-centred nutrition management plans based on interpretation of nutrition assessment data for healthy individuals and those with selected acute and chronic medical conditions
4. Apply knowledge of diseases and conditions to the dietetic case management of individuals
5. Translate evidence-based nutrition information and dietarey approaches into practical recommendations considering social and cultural factors
