Allow us to introduce you to the inner-city suburb of Hawthorn in Melbourne, and all the reasons you're going to love living there:

Hawthorn is an inner-city suburb with much to offer.

Home to Swinburne University of Technology, a bustling shopping strip, restaurants and green spaces, the suburb attracts many domestic and international students, families and young professionals.

Combining the safety of a traditional suburb with the amenities and vibrancy of the city, Hawthorn is one of Melbourne's best suburbs. If you've been thinking about making the move to Melbourne, then Hawthorn might just be the perfect spot for you.

1. Close to campus

Say goodbye to rushed mornings! One major benefit of living in Hawthorn is living so close to the Swinburne campus. Whether you choose to live in on-campus accommodation, a nearby share house or private rental, you won't have to worry about commuting to campus.

So, instead of spending valuable time stuck in traffic or on public transport, you'll have extra time to sleep, study and socialise when you're not in class.

2. Close to the city

Since Hawthorn is located just six kilometres from Melbourne's CBD, getting to and from the city – and surrounding suburbs – is a breeze. Hawthorn is serviced by multiple trams and train lines that travel into the city and around the outer suburbs of Melbourne.

It is also conveniently located between the Monash and Eastern Freeways, giving you direct access to the rest of Victoria by car. Why not take a road trip to one of the many national parks just outside Melbourne?

3. Plenty of green spaces

If you enjoy spending time in the great outdoors, then you'll love living in Hawthorn. In addition to leafy tree-lined streets, the suburb also has many sprawling parks, gardens and riverside reserves. You'll find bike paths (learn more about bike safety), walking trails and spaces to relax. With all these green spaces, you can get your nature fix without ever having to leave the city.

4. Vibrant student atmosphere

Many students from Swinburne and other local education institutions choose to call Hawthorn home. This gives the suburb a noticeably young and vibrant atmosphere. Plus, with so many students living in the suburb, you'll have the opportunity to meet other fellow students and Hawthorn residents at local events.

With plenty of student-run events and social activities taking place throughout the year, you'll join a warm and welcoming student community.

5. Excellent safety

Hawthorn is a very safe suburb. Its higher-than-average house prices, picturesque parks and renowned education institutions attract a demographic of like-minded families, professionals and students. This close-knit and friendly community means the area boasts a lower-than-average crime rate compared to other parts of Melbourne.

6. Lots of things to see and do

At the heart of Hawthorn is the lively Glenferrie Road, where you'll find a buzzing outdoor shopping strip with boutique stores, gift shops, banks, major supermarkets and plenty of hip coffee shops, bars and restaurants.

And if it's cultural experiences you're after, catch a film at the Lido Cinemas one night and listen to live jazz at the Lido Jazz Room the next. Or visit the Hawthorn Arts Centre to check out the rotating calendar of fantastic arts events.

The suburb also has a number of ovals and sports ground, parks, churches of different denominations and the Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre.
