Machine Design
Overview
This unit aims to develop student's ability to design mechanical engineering systems which includes use of standards, codes, catalogues and design handbooks to extract information to make appropriate calculations and/or selections.
The unit also covers analysis of the application to determine suitability of machine components and assembly. Proven design theory and/or techniques are applied to achieve optimal design that meets system requirements.

Unit learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
- Identify system requirements in consultation with appropriate personnel when designing mechanical components and systems
- Analyse component and assembly design conditions when working on an engineering project
- Select appropriate engineering materials and components to meet design specification
- Design mechanical engineering systems when working on an engineering project
- Prepare design documentation and reports when working on an engineering project
- Demonstrate an understanding of WHS requirements and comply with standards when working in an engineering project

Hurdle
As the minimum requirements of assessment to pass a unit and meet all Unit Learning Outcomes to a minimum standard, a student must achieve:
(i) an aggregate mark of 50% or more, and
(ii) at least 40% in the final assessment.
Students who do not successfully achieve hurdle requirement (ii) will receive a maximum of 45% as the total mark for the unit.
