Overview

The aim of this unit is to provide students with in-depth understanding of crew resource management and its practical applications. The unit covers key aspects of crew contracts and agreements, as well as the impacts of good and poor rostering on crew fatigue and operational risks. The unit is designed to equip students with broader workforce planning considerations, including scheduling strategies and disruption management, to ensure safe and efficient airline operations.

Unit learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  1. Explain the key principles of airline crewing philosophy, objectives, and operational efficiencies, along with the challenges associated with crew management
  2. Integrate regulatory and operational requirements into crew planning and rostering practices
  3. Discern key elements of crew contracts and agreements and apply this knowledge in crew roster creation
  4. Recognise and assess human-related issues relating to short and long-haul duty periods, fatigue, rest, and acclimatisation
  5. Identify and apply short and long-term manpower planning strategies to match crew supply with demand, and address issues such as duty limits, accommodation, and transportation, particularly during disruptions
  6. Explain normal crew procedures and practices occurring on a daily basis for various types of operations
  7. Construct a set of realistic crew rosters using appropriate software, taking legal and other frameworks into account
