Overview

This unit will introduce fundamental principles involved in research and practice within Sport, Exercise Psychology. The primary objective is to facilitate the understanding of how psychological factors influence involvement and performance in sport, exercise and physical activity settings. The unit will explore such topics as personality, identity, competition and cooperation, motivation, and group cohesion and dynamics in sport, exercise and physical activity.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Critically evaluate psychology theory and research findings relevant to sport, exercise and physical activity.
  • Explain key concepts and theories from a number of content areas including personality, identity, motivation, anxiety/arousal, community engagement, groups and teams as they apply to sport, exercise and physical activity.
  • Apply theoretical perspectives from sport and exercise psychology to real world contexts.
  • Critique research methodologies used within sport and exercise psychology, and develop an awareness of professional and research ethics in sport, exercise and physical activity settings.
  • Integrate information from various sources concerning topics and problems related to the psychology of sport, exercise and physical activity, and communicate the results of these investigations in a logical and clear manner to different audiences.
  • Demonstrate an increased understanding of your own behaviour, mental processes and experiences and the behaviour of others in the context of sport, exercise and physical activity.
