Overview

This unit introduces students to the concepts, processes, industry principles and advanced techniques required of the professional editor in editing a variety of texts, including: appraisal of texts, substantive and structural editing and proofreading.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Investigate and apply industry principles of grammar, syntax, spelling and punctuation in diverse social and cultural contexts for publishing
  • Investigate and apply industry standard principles for proofreading in diverse publishing contexts
  • Use industry standard practice to appraise diverse written material for professional editing
  • Use professional principles of collaboration and feedback to apply substantive and/or structural editing to creative products
  • Review, refine and amend texts to enhance the clarity of written communication using consistent industry standard practices in diverse publishing contexts

Content

  • Editing content to industry standards: application of industry standards and conventions for clear language, grammar, syntax, consistency, form, and genre
  • Investigate and apply industry standards of proofreading
  • Analyse concepts, processes, principles, theories and elements of creative non-fiction writing, including First nations perspectives
  • Develop and apply an original concept for creative non-fiction
  • Implementing skills for substantive editing and publication of texts across digital platforms
  • Evaluate, review, revise and incorporate editorial advice
