Overview

This unit builds on the requirements of the registered nurse to understand patient safety, risk management and health informatics. Extension of knowledge and skills to improve patient safety will assist in preparing the student to practice safely across a range of healthcare contexts. This unit explores the concept of harm in health and the developing complexities of healthcare contexts.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Identify, describe and evaluate the principles and methods of patient safety within the complexity of varying healthcare contexts
  • Identify and evaluate the principles of clinical risk, near misses, errors, risk assessment and incident monitoring
  • Analyse and apply risk-management principles to identify, assess and report potential risk in the healthcare context
  • Describe the components of governance within healthcare contexts in relation to patient safety
  • Describe the principles of quality improvement
  • Critically analyse current technologies and patient reporting for assisting with health
