Overview

This unit will introduce you to the values that underpin strengths-based nursing where you will learn to use critical thinking, self-awareness, reflection, and mindfulness. These skills will assist you to develop resilience as a nurse and foster resilience in people in your care. The unit will also introduce you to health promotion and the role of the nurse in primary care and health promotion.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Identify the values of the strengths-based nursing framework
  • Discuss and apply strategies that empower individuals to take an active role in health maintenance and self-care
  • Apply written and verbal communication techniques in a context-sensitive way to facilitate a collaborative partnership between the nurse, the patient, and the healthcare team
  • Describe and apply health promotion models to enhance the teaching and empowering of individuals to be active in health maintenance
  • Describe a contemporary health care issue in consideration of the determinants of health, health promotion and healthy communities
  • Identify and describe the role of the nurse in primary care and health promotion

Hurdle

As the minimum requirements of assessment to pass a unit and meet all ULOs to a minimum standard, an undergraduate student must have achieved:

• achieve an overall mark for the unit of 50% or more. Conceded passes are not recognised by the Australian Nursing & Midwifery Accreditation Council therefore conceded passes will not be granted. • tutorials have an 80% attendance requirement as per the Australian Nursing & Midwifery Accreditation Council.
