Overview

This unit applies the relationships between nutrition and health and disease and the relevant scientific evidence. Students will explore key diseases in which nutritional factors have a role in the prevention or progression of common health conditions such as: cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes mellitus, weight gain, arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions.

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Examine and analyse the connection between diet/dietary patterns and diseases affecting many Australians, and the mechanisms of nutrients/ food components within these that lead to the prevention, onset or progression of disease.
  • Critically appraise the scientific literature to examine the role of nutritional factors in the aetiology of a disease and identify strengths, limitations and gaps in current research.
  • Translate current scientific evidence on nutrition and disease into accurate and appropriate recommendations for a range of audiences
