Contemporary Communities
Overview
This capstone unit enables students to translate knowledge into action by working with and for Indigenous communities or organisations on a negotiated project. Synthesising the knowledge gained in previous units, students will have an opportunity to apply their critical thinking and problem solving skills to real world situations and issues affecting Indigenous people in the community. Students will examine and apply concepts of cultural safety which will enable them to learn and adopt culturally safe practices when engaging with Indigenous peoples, which can be applied to their professional lives.

Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
- Critically examine issues including racism, power and privilege in various contemporary societal contexts including employment, health, housing, politics, and criminal justice
- Examine the complexities of intercultural communication in social and professional contexts
- Critically reflect upon the influence of race and its social construction, privilege and power
- Confidently practise and encourage broader thinking in others on issues of inter-cultural relationships
- Participate in researched, informed discussions of Indigenous issues in Australia, and inter-cultural discussions in general
- Conduct an independent action project that demonstrates sensitivity and understanding of cultural safety in a contemporary workplace and/or community environment

- Race, whiteness and power in contemporary society
- Concepts of cultural competence and cultural safety
- Culturally safe practices when engaging with Indigenous peoples and communities
- Understanding and working with, and for, Indigenous communities
- Elders and dialogue
- Identification and formulation of community-based projects or operationalising a previously identified business proposal, including identification of:
- Personalised/negotiated assessment
- Community mentor(s)
