Overview

This unit examines the concepts, issues and challenges that are critical for implementing, maintaining and completing projects successfully. The reasons behind contemporary organisations move towards a project approach are considered and the common methodologies, tools and techniques of project management are critically evaluated. Students will examine the Project Management Body of Knowledge and its knowledge areas from a strategic perspective and evaluate how an organisation's individual industry, culture, structure and objectives, may influence the project management approach taken. Students will study the risks and challenges that emerge in project management and the tools that have been developed to address these.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Demonstrate coherent and advanced knowledge of organisational strategy and the principles of competitive advantage and align these to project management
  • Critically evaluate project management principles, practices, methodologies, tools and techniques and align these to the strategic objectives of organisations
  • Critically analyse complex project management problems and identify appropriate solutions to these in the organisational context
  • Critically evaluate issues in contemporary project management and communicate about these effectively to a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Communicate effectively as a professional and function as an effective leader or member of a team
