Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Analyse current trends and identify problems through a process of stakeholder consultation, and the review of literature and artefacts, and apply this knowledge to the articulation of a design project
  • Apply participatory design principles and techniques, and an understanding of the relationship between research design and social practice, to a design project
  • Produce a brief and project plan that outline a strategy for solving a well-defined problem
  • Synthesise design possibilities into a single, environmentally cognisant proposition
  • Critically evaluate a proposition through real-world testing and conclude with recommendations for further development
  • Evaluate the investigative process and outcomes through concise, coherent and well-structured documentation, design outcomes, and presentations

Content

This detailed and professional level project will address critical societal issues identified from an analysis of current trends and problem setting approaches. This unit enables students to respond to an emerging, current or future issue by immersing the designer in the problem in order to respond with an appropriate design brief and project plan.

Topics for discussion may include:

  • Research and analysis of current and future trends
  • Undertake a conceptual exploration for the development of an architectural space
  • Interview and data recording techniques
  • Market research and business plans
  • Consumer needs matrix
  • Conduct design research through literature and artefact review and apply these to a design proposal
  • Report and strategy writing
  • Use a range of analytical and research skills to facilitate the articulation of a design project
  • Evaluation through consultation, mock-ups and real-world tests
  • Recommendations for future development
