This unit of study aims to develop further understanding of sustainability as it applies to water engineering and, of the basic engineering principles and analysis techniques to design a water supply system.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Conduct scientific research using appropriate sources of data and interpret and synthesise these in terms of ongoing scientific debates (K1, K4, K5, S1, S2, S4, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7)
  • Discuss and debate the most effective means of dealing with current and future water shortages in an urban context with an appreciation for climate change and sustainability issues (K4, K5, K6, S2, A2, A5, A7)
  • Plan and design a recycled water pipeline, assess alternative design strategies in terms of economic, social and environmental factors and justify your design in terms of these factors and standard engineering principles and practices (K2, K3, K5, K6, S1, S2, S3, S4, A1, A2, A3, A4, A6, A7)
  • Appraise and assess the quality of your colleagues’ project work and presentation skills and reflect upon your own experiences within your project team (A4, A5, A6, A7)
  • Discuss and interpret your research and/or design findings with a your professional colleagues by conducting a professional presentation (K4, K5, S1, S2, S3, S4, A2, A4, A5, A7)
  • Demonstrate your negotiation, planning, management, research and analysis skills to form an effective part of a project team (S2, S4, A2, A5, A6, A7)

Hurdle

As the minimum requirements of assessment to pass a unit and meet all ULOs to a minimum standard, an undergraduate student must have achieved:

(i) an aggregate mark of 50% or more, and(ii) at least 40% for the Engineering design report component.Students who do not successfully achieve hurdle requirement (ii) will receive a maximum of 45% as the total mark for the unit.
