Overview

The aim of this unit is to provide students with the skills to plan and develop a major research project in the field of aviation. The specific topic is chosen from a broad range of areas offered by academic supervisors. It may encompass specific industry issues. The project undertaken will be of the mutual interests to the student(s) and supervisor(s). Students are expected in a team environment to conduct joint research under the guidance of the academic supervisor throughout the semester. Students should note that the work completed in this unit forms the basis of AVA40005 in the second semester.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Identify the basic principles of academic research and the fundamental concepts of research
  • Describe the characteristic features of common research methods (i.e. qualitative and quantitative methods) and debate their relative merits
  • Describe the relevance and importance of ethics in research
  • Within a team environment identify a research question (or project problem/objective), or questions, and justify the selection of an appropriate and ethically managed research method
  • Develop an appropriate structure for a major research project
  • Interpret and critically evaluate previously published research in a formal literature review.
  • Propose a proper method to analyse data in the following unit AVA40005 Aviation Research Project (Part 2)

Hurdle

As the minimum requirements of assessment to pass a unit and meet all ULOs to a minimum standard, an undergraduate student must have achieved:

an aggregate mark for the unit of 50% or more.
