Overview

This Unit introduces students to the key theoretical frameworks that underpin group work, and the application of these theories to working with a diverse range of client groups. The importance of the group process will be explored, as well as the principles of developing and evaluating group programs in a counselling context.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Evaluate the major theoretical frameworks underpinning group work in a counselling context for different client groups
  • Apply research principles and methods in relation to the development and evaluation of a group therapy program, which also takes into consideration ethical and professional issues
  • Articulate their thinking regarding the development and evaluation of a group therapy program in oral and written format
  • Reflect on the process of working collaboratively to develop a group therapy program to be run in a human service organisation
