Aims and objectives

This unit extends students’ understanding of problematic criminal behaviours into the specific areas of stalking, abnormal complaining, and harmful sexual behaviours towards children and adults. The unit will assist students to understand the psychological factors associated with these problem behaviours, and enhance their skills to implement the Problem Behaviour framework to a wider range of behaviours that are commonly encountered in forensic settings.

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
1. Formulate the role of distal, proximal, individual and contextual factors for a wide range of different problem behaviours
2. Assess the contributory role of different risk factors in different types of problem behaviour, based on an understanding of relevant empirical research
3. Apply the problem behaviour framework to individual cases to guide the development of appropriate treatment and management plans for sexual offenders, stalkers and abnormal complainants
