Industry 4.0 Hardware Project
Duration
- One Semester or equivalent
Contact hours
- 36 hours Face to Face + blended
On-campus unit delivery combines face-to-face and digital learning.
Aims and objectives
This unit aims to give students practical experience in the application and design of the hardware-based tools of Industry 4.0. These include flexible and configurable production lines, sensors, actuators and networking devices.
Unit Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit students will be able to:
1. Understand the concepts of value creation and capture in a production process (A2, K3, K4)
2. Analyze a production requirement and design a process that is optimized for value creation and capture that will fulfill that requirement (A3, A4, S1, S3)
3. Design a production process that takes an integrated approach to the use of hardware to manipulate goods and software to capture and process data for value creation and capture (A5, A6, K1, K3, K5, S1, S2, S3, S4)
Swinburne Engineering Competencies (A1-7, K1-6, S1-4): find out more about Engineering Skills and Competencies including the Engineers Australia Stage 1 Competencies.

Content
In this unit, students will complete a project implementing the hardware-based components of an Industry 4.0 solution to a manufacturing and/or production problem. The project will require students to
- analyze a production process to understand how a solution can be created to optimize for value creation and capture
- design the production process layout including integration with software platforms and data capture and analysis tools
- create a model layout using components of a demonstrator platform to implement the solution encompassed in the design
Study resources
- Reading materials and references.
Reading materials
A list of reading materials and/or required texts will be made available in the Unit Outline.
