Overview

This unit of study aims to develop your understanding of, and familiarity with, the fundamental theory and basic methods of Electromagnetism with special reference to electromagnetic wave theory. It also provides an introduction to the application of the theory to wired and wireless communication and related technologies.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Describe the physical significance of Maxwell’s equations (K1)
  • Analyse problems associated with the calculation of Electric and Magnetic fields (K1, K2, S2)
  • Describe the characteristics of electromagnetic waves in unbounded and bounded media (K3)
  • Analyse the solutions of field and wave problems in the context of a range of applications including transmission lines and waveguides (K3, S1)
  • Apply appropriate theory to the basics of radio frequency propagation and microwave technology (K3, S1)

Hurdle

As the minimum requirements of assessment to pass a unit and meet all ULOs to a minimum standard, an undergraduate student must have achieved:

(i) an aggregate mark of 50% or more, and(ii) Obtain at least 40% in the final exam Students who do not successfully achieve hurdle requirement (ii), will receive a maximum of 45% as the total mark for the unit.
