Overview
This unit examines and consolidates the knowledge, skills and evidence to effectively evaluate and manage critically ill patients, gender-specific health and paediatric conditions within the physiotherapy framework. Students will gain an understanding of the role and scope of physiotherapy within an inter-disciplinary team with respect to the management of critically ill patients, gender-specific health and paediatric conditions. This unit also explores the role of technology and digital health in these settings.

Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
- Analyse the physical manifestations of critical illness on the neuro-muscular, neurological and cardiorespiratory system
- Explore and examine men’s and women’s health and paediatric conditions
- Formulate clinical reasoning with regards to diagnosis and management of critical illness, men’s and women’s health and paediatric conditions within the inter-disciplinary setting
- Critically review the research evidence surrounding the physiotherapy management of critical illness, men’s and women’s health and paediatric conditions
- Safely implement evidence-informed physiotherapy interventions on critically ill patients, men’s and women’s health and paediatric conditions within a simulated environment using an appropriate technology
- Articulate effective and appropriate communication skills for engagement with patients, carers and other stakeholders

- Radiology in the acute care, paediatric and men’s and women’s health
- Systematic approaches to the assessment of critically ill individuals
- Developmental stages across childhood and normal variations
- Systematic approaches to the assessment of children with musculoskeletal, developmental and neurological conditions
- Anatomy and physiology relevant to antenatal and postnatal care
- Structures that contribute to male and female continence and ano-rectal continence across lifespan
- Technologies that aid diagnosis and physiotherapy management of paediatric and men’s and women’s health conditions
- Evidence informed outcome measures and clinical tools
