The Graduate Diploma of Information Technology course is concerned with the accumulation of theoretical knowledge and practical skills related to the design, construction, operation, support and maintenance of information technology (IT) solutions.
This course will provide students with entry-level skills and introduces techniques used in the design and construction of IT solutions, as well as the research skills needed to assess the effectiveness of a solution or technology.
Students will gain specialist skills and become capable of working with information technology solutions at an entry level. This course provides graduates with knowledge and skills allowing them to undertake professional work in field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), and as a pathway for research and further learning.
The Graduate Diploma of Information Technology provides graduates from non-IT backgrounds a path to move into a career in IT.

Course description

Course structure
To qualify for the award of Graduate Diploma of Information Technology students must complete 150 credit points comprising:
The Graduate Diploma of Information Technology consists of 150 credit points. Units normally carry 12.5 credit points (cps.). In each year, eight (8) units normally constitute a full-time load of 100 credit points and four (4) units normally constitute a part-time load of 50 credit points. The volume of learning is typically 1.5 years.
- Eleven (11) core units (137.5 credit points)
- One (1) elective (12.5 credit points)
The Graduate Diploma of Information Technology consists of 150 credit points. Units normally carry 12.5 credit points (cps.). In each year, eight (8) units normally constitute a full-time load of 100 credit points and four (4) units normally constitute a part-time load of 50 credit points. The volume of learning is typically 1.5 years.

Course fees
Fees are estimates for students commencing in 2023 only: Tuition fees as published are subject to change given individual circumstances at enrolment. These fees apply for units studied in 2023 only and may change for units studied in future years. If part-time study is permitted, annual fees will be proportionally lower based on the number of units taken per semester.
How do I pay my fees?
FEE-HELP is a loan given to eligible full-fee paying higher education students to help pay part or all of their tuition fees. The Commonwealth Government pays the amount of the loan directly to Swinburne.
HECS-HELP is a loan and discount scheme available to eligible students enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place. A HECS-HELP loan can cover all or part of the student contribution amount.
Entry requirements
Applicants are required to have completed:
- a bachelor degree (or higher award) in any discipline (with few or no studies in information technology – less than one third of the degree); or
- the Graduate Certificate of Information Technology; or
- the Postgraduate Qualifying Program (available to International applicants only).
