Charge up your electrical trade career with a Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start).

In this pre-apprenticeship, get hands-on project experience to develop the skills for a wide range of electrical trade jobs.

A solid grounding if you’re considering a full electrical trade apprenticeship, you’ll get the edge over a non-trained apprentice as you’ll be ready to work in the industry.

This course is recognised by the Electrical Trades Union (ETU) and the National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA).

Upon completion you’ll receive a Construction Industry White Card and four units credit towards the four-year TAFE component of the Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician course to become an apprentice electrician.

Course description

The Certificate II in Electrotechnology Studies (Career Start) aims to provide students with training similar to that of a first-year electrical apprentice. The objective is to develop work skills for the electrical trades, including problem identification and problem solving.

Electricians (and their apprentices) work in domestic, commercial and industrial settings, whether that is doing installations, repairs or diagnostic work. Employers look for apprentices and trainees who are work-ready, adaptable and efficient (as well as dependable and customer-friendly). This pre-vocational qualification is about giving you exposure to the work, equipment and expectations you will face, as well as helping you decide where your interests lie and what sort of work you would like to be doing. Apart from obvious lighting and electrical power work, you could think about refrigeration and air-conditioning, security systems, renewable energy, or industrial and commercial industries.

Being a trained pre-apprentice will give you an advantage over non-trained applicants when applying for either apprentice or trainee positions.

This course prepares students for employment as an apprentice in the electrical, refrigeration and air conditioning, security systems, renewable energy, domestic, industrial and commercial industries. It can also help prepare you for the workforce or allow you to improve on existing skills.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for the course, although participants would be best equipped to achieve the course outcomes if they have language literacy and numeracy skills that are at least equivalent to the National Reporting System (NRS) Level 2.
