Namita’s favourite part of completing the Swinburne Employability Award was taking part in a job interview simulation which developed her confidence and interview skills.

The Swinburne Employability Award helped Namita to discover her values and interests including her love for leadership roles.

Building real world skills

While studying a Bachelor of Health Science majoring in Biomedical Science and Neuroscience, Namita boosted her confidence and career-readiness by completing all three streams of the Swinburne Employability Award.

After receiving an email about the award while completing her studies, Namita decided to give the program a go. This decision allowed her to gain greater clarity on aligning her values with future opportunities, particularly in research and innovation in cognitive health.

Namita’s favourite part of the award was the mock interview simulation, completed as part of the Career Passport stream. The exercise gives students the chance to practise answering realistic interview questions and receive feedback in a professional setting. Namita reflected on how realistic the interview felt and that it helped her with her confidence when she interviewed for her current role in healthcare.

“I learned a lot about myself, I got to know who I am as a person and what values I really hold. For example, I love being in leadership roles and I would not have explored those if I had not gone through the modules for the certificate, so it really helped me push my boundaries and know what kind of person I am.”

While completing the award, Namita developed soft skills essential for success in her future career and realised that she needed to improve on peer collaboration and cut down on her habit of overthinking.

By completing the three streams of the award she said she felt more confident and independent.

“I realised after completing the award, it actually helped me boost my confidence overall.

“I was actively participating in my classes with my teachers to ask questions, which is something I would have not done initially when I started university because I was really underconfident,” she said.

Namita felt prepared when starting her healthcare job as she put into practice the communication, punctuality and leadership skills she developed as part of completing the award.

A lesson in stepping outside your comfort zone

For Namita, the Swinburne Employability Award was more than just a certificate, it was an experience in self-discovery.

Namita recommended all three streams of the award to other students and encouraged them to get out of their comfort zone to stand out beyond the classroom.

“You need to explore your boundaries to grow and to know who you are as a person and what values you hold,” she said.
