About Kamal

Passion under oppression

Kamal took a leap by fleeing his home country with a passion for healthcare in his heart.

Care within community

Kamal finds support as he settles into Melbourne and begins his studies at Swinburne.

Opportunities to give back

Kamal is ready to assist other migrants and refugees through community and medical support.

Finding freedom

At the age of 19, Kamal worked in the military services in his home country of Iran. Based in a small medical clinic, he held various roles assisting in emergency medicine, pharmacy and wards – quickly realising his passion for healthcare.

While working through the ongoing conflict in Iran, Kamal witnessed first-hand the impact of trauma on his patients' physical and mental health. He wanted to help the community in a bigger way and wished to study medicine.

However, because Kamal and his family were of Bahá’í faith, he was forbidden from attending university or progressing to any official roles. Under increasing oppression, Kamal and his family fled to Turkey, where they lived as refugees for six years before migrating to Australia in 2019.

Starting new

Upon arriving in Australia, Kamal was amazed by the support services available to him. Through government programs, he was connected with health and education support, which ultimately led him to Swinburne via the Adult Migrant English Program.

Soon after, Kamal was finally able to pursue study. He went on to complete the Certificate III in Health Services Assistance and the Certificate IV in Community Services. His drive to help others and give back to the community is evident.

"I received such great support from both the community and Swinburne, as I helped my family build a better life for ourselves. We are so thankful to live in a safe community – free from religious prejudice," says Kamal.

Embracing opportunities

Kamal hopes to work in a role where he can assist other migrants and refugees through community and medical support. Swinburne has created incredible opportunities for him to achieve this, including a work placement at Ringwood Private Hospital.

He completed the placement in 2024 and thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on and practical experience. Kamal's advice to others is to embrace the community and seize any opportunity that arises.
