My 12-month work placement was as a cardiac technologist at MonashHeart, a specialist cardiology service at Monash Medical Centre, Clayton.

I was halfway through a different degree at another university and was unhappy. I realised I wanted to be in a more scientific field with the opportunity for hands-on experience. I spoke to someone studying a Bachelor of Science (Psychology and Psychophysiology) at Swinburne, who highly recommended Swinburne’s placement program. That was enough to push me to move universities, and I haven’t looked back since.

Eva-Louise completed a 12-month work placement as a Cardiac Technologist at MonashHeart.

I’ve been trained to perform and interpret Electrocardiography tests (ECGs), which involve applying a variety of heart monitors and performing treadmill stress testing. I also worked in the cardiac catheterisation lab, monitoring the patient’s heart rhythm while delicate interventional procedures are performed.

  • "The best thing about placement is doing and learning things I would never have had exposure to as a student."

Eva-Louise , Bachelor of Health Science

While sitting in a lecture theatre learning about what each part of an ECG represents, I never thought that I’d be the one looking at a patient’s ECG, recognising a dangerous arrhythmia and taking it to a doctor for immediate treatment.

Not a day goes by that I don’t learn something new. Most importantly, however, I’ve developed skills in communicating effectively and empathetically with diverse patient populations as well as the wider staff at the hospital. I highly recommend Swinburne’s placement program. I’ve matured as a professional and will have a competitive advantage in my career with a wealth of experience rivalling that of other graduates.

The greatest advantage of this placement is the opportunity to explore a career in healthcare and decide whether it’s right for me.
