About Shaleha

An interstate student

Shaleha relocates from Sydney to Melbourne to pursue her dream career.

Becoming job-ready

Shaleha enjoys the smooth transition into her work placement at libraries.

A tale of two cities

Shaleha is ready for a career is Sydney while maintaining her networks in Melbourne.

From Sydney to Melbourne

Shaleha initally wished to pursue librarianship, but could not find a suitable course in her homestate of New South Wales. After high school, she completed a bachelor degree in history and visual arts and went into the recruitment sector.

Ten years later, she was coming into a pivotal period. When many of her friends were making long-term decisions about career, Shaleha realised she wanted a career change and researched her options, including studying at Swinburne in Melbourne.

More than books

Swinburne's reputation for excellent standards convinced Shaleha to temporarily move to Melbourne to undertake the Diploma of Library and Information Services. The flexibility and job-readiness of the course appealed to her, as well as the Australian Library and Information Association accreditation.

Shaleha also appreciates the 70 hours of work placement where she gained valuable experience, particularly in archiving at high school and public libraries. "The administration of the placement was smooth. Students were given autonomy throughout the process," she says.

Shaleha also received a $500 scholarship from Swinburne – enabling her to upgrade her secondhand laptop and making her study experience easier.

"The best part about Swinburne has been the networking, facilities and support from my teachers."

Finding home at Swinburne

"The best part about Swinburne has been the networking, facilities and support from my teachers. They always make themselves available to provide personalised attention," Shaleha says.

"It didn't matter that I was from Sydney – the whole cohort was so welcoming. The group chats, the events and activities on campus – there's always something to do."

Currently in the final weeks of her course, Shaleha is looking forward to heading into the public library sector in Sydney once fully accredited, while retaining the valuable connections she has made in Melbourne.
