Swinburne University of Technology has 26 subjects ranked in the 2026 ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS).

The results span a broad range of disciplines, with three subjects ranked in the top 75 globally.

Automation and Control recorded Swinburne’s highest result, rising one place to eighth in the world and first in Australia.

Computer Science and Engineering also moved up, rising five places to 29th globally and second in Australia.

Hospitality and Tourism Management rose from the 76-100 band to 51-75, while Artificial Intelligence climbed from 151-200 to 76-100.

Nursing and Transportation Science and Technology both moved into the 101-150 band, while Education rose into the 151-200 band.

Physics maintained its position in the 201-300 band and ranked equal sixth in Australia.

Swinburne's Professor Karen Hapgood, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, says the results highlight the breadth of research at Swinburne.

“Automation and Control ranking eighth in the world and first in Australia, alongside Computer Science and Engineering at 29th globally, reflects the strength of research being undertaken at Swinburne,” Professor Hapgood says.

“We’ve also seen strong movement in areas including Artificial Intelligence, Nursing and Transportation Science and Technology.

  • Computer Science and Engineering: 29 (up from 34)

  • Hospitality and Tourism Management: 51-75 (up from 76-100)

  • Artificial Intelligence: 76-100 (up from 151-200)

  • Law: 101-150 

  • Nursing: 101-150 (up from 151-200)

  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering: 101-150

  • Civil Engineering: 101-150 

  • Metallurgical Engineering: 101-150 

  • Transportation Science and Technology: 101-150 (up from 151-200)

  • Communication: 151-200 

  • Education: 151-200 (up from 201-300)

  • Mechanical Engineering: 151-200  

  • Business Administration: 151-200

  • Physics: 201-300

  • Telecommunication Engineering: 201-300

The ShanghaiRanking’s GRAS 2025 ranks approximately 2,000 universities across 100 countries and regions in 57 subjects across natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences.

The 2026 ranking methodology considers five broad areas: world-class faculty, world-class output, high-quality research, research impact and international collaboration.
