The release of the Excellence in Research (ERA) Australia 2015 rankings confirms Swinburne’s rapid rise as a university producing outstanding research outcomes with a focus on science, technology and innovation.
This year, Swinburne maintained an ERA 5 ranking in the broad field of the Physical Sciences research achieving the highest possible ranking of 'well above world standard' in nine fields of research:
- Physical Sciences
- Astronomical and Space Sciences
- Atomic, Molecular, Nuclear, Particle and Plasma Physics
- Optical Physics
- Maritime Engineering
- Materials Engineering
- Physical Chemistry (including Structural)
Notably, there was also a significant improvement in Swinburne’s rankings of research 'above world standard' (ERA 4), with the following fields of research earning this outcome:
- Quantum Physics
- Chemical Sciences
- Computer Software
- Civil Engineering
- Electrical and Electronic Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Communication and Media Studies
- Communications Technologies
- Language, Communication and Culture
“These rankings demonstrate that Swinburne’s strategy of research concentration is working,” says Swinburne’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Linda Kristjanson.
“By not trying to be all things to all people, Swinburne has developed as a research-intensive university recognised nationally and internationally for excellence in select areas.
“In particular, the new recognition that we have achieved for research excellence in atomic physics, nanotechnology and neurosciences is particularly pleasing.”
“Our challenge now is to improve further on this trajectory and to take the university to the next level,” says Professor Aleksandar Subic, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development).
“While we are proud of this affirming assessment of our research excellence, we are equally committed to translating our research into results that will serve industry and the wider community.”
