Membership 

Joining the library is automatic for current staff and students. Your Swinburne ID card is your library card.  

If you are not a current staff or student, check the information for community membership. Before completing the online form, please review the conditions for the different types of memberships below. 

Conditions for membership

  • Casual or temporary staff as well as students who have not yet completed enrolment can register for membership. 
  • CAVAL and ULANZ members can borrow up to 10 items at a time.

  • DVDs, periodicals, videos and equipment cannot be borrowed,

  • Swinburne Library reserves the right to refuse any application for registration.

  • The Library should be notified immediately of any change of address. 

  • Reciprocal Borrower cards are not transferable and are valid only when signed.

  • Registration is subject to the conditions of the CAVAL Reciprocal Borrower Program.

  • Loss of a card should be reported immediately to the home institution and to Swinburne Library, otherwise Swinburne Library can take no responsibility for items borrowed on that card.

  • Reciprocal borrowers who have overdue items or outstanding late return fines in excess of $9.99 will have borrowing privileges suspended. 

CAVAL membership

CAVAL membership allows you to borrow from other Victorian academic libraries.

ULANZ membership 

Borrow in person from participating Australian and New Zealand university libraries. Apply in person to the library you wish to borrow from.

Eligibility for CAVAL and ULANZ membership 

Most Swinburne students and staff, except Online Universities Australia (OUA) students, are eligible for CAVAL and ULANZ. 

Enrolment at individual institutions is subject to the eligibility conditions applicable at each host library. Ask the library staff if you are unsure about your eligibility. 


Registering for CAVAL 

You must register in the CAVAL Reciprocal Borrowing Program to participate. Register at the Swinburne library service desk or by visiting a member library. Present a current Swinburne ID card or letter that confirms your current enrolment, a photo ID and proof of contact details to register. You will receive a CAVAL card valid until 28 February the following year. You must renew your CAVAL registration each year.

  • The annual fee is $110 (GST inclusive)

  • All memberships are per individual member.

  • Membership is valid for 12 months.

  • Alumni members can borrow up to 10 items at a time. 

  • Videos, DVDs and equipment cannot be borrowed.

  • There is limited access to selected databases on campus only.

  • Home access to Swinburne journals, databases, and online resources, is not available due to contractual licences. However, a collection of online databases and resources are available to all Victorians through the State Library of Victoria. Access can also be arranged from home.

  • The annual fee is $330 (GST inclusive). 
  • Membership is valid for 12 months.
  • Community members can borrow up to 10 items at a time.
  • Videos, DVDs and equipment cannot be borrowed.

Visitor access 

Selected databases are available to alumni, registered borrowers and CAVAL members when you visit on-campus libraries.

Note: Off-campus access is not available.

You must provide photo identification at the library service desk. We cannot provide you with passwords due to licence restrictions.

Conditions of use

  • All patrons must comply with licence requirements, conditions of use, and the Copyright Act.

  • Databases may be used only for personal research and study. Commercial use of library database content is not permitted. 

  • During busy times, we may not be able to provide immediate access for visitors and a time limit may be imposed. 

  • Visitor access is subject to licence requirements and is therefore subject to change at any time.
