Attention Junior Scientists! Get ready for four days filled with hands-on holiday science for curious kids from Year 1 to Year 8! The PrimeSCI! Team are excited to welcome you to Swinburne Hawthorn in January 2026.

Join us for hands-on learning in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Robotics and Maths!! Workshops are tailored for each age group with exciting experiments and investigations for everyone.

Science Workshops

Examine the important parts of plants, both inside and out. There are no magic beans here, just a hands-on introduction to botany for our young scientists. (Year 1 - 4)

Find out more about the movement and transformation of electrical energy as you assemble simple circuits using wires, buzzers, motors, lights and batteries. Add in some solar panels for the perfect summer science recipe! (Year 3 - 6)

Escape from our hot summer with some cool science, as you experiment with hot and cold, movement of heat, winter weather and shaking up your own ice cream in this tasty workshop. Perfect for a hot summer day! Note - children will have the opportunity to eat milk, cream, sugar and vanilla essence. (Year 1 - 4)

Head into space with the little Edison Robots! Learn about space research and exploration as you work in small groups to program the robots to complete challenges. (Year 1 - 3)

Catch, bounce, bend, split and focus light with this collection of engaging physics activities. Work in both dark and light conditions! (Year 3 - 6)

It's solid, liquid and gas, plus much more! Learn from explosions, modelling molecules, links to the water cycle and peculiar oobleck. (Year 3 - 6)

Head into space with the little Edison Robots! Learn about space research and exploration as you work in small groups to program the robots to complete challenges. (Year 1 - 3)

Note - this is a repeat of workshops on Wednesday 21 January. Please do not attend both.

Pivot! (Year 5 - 6) - Have you ever helped someone move a bulky object around a tricky corner? Perhaps you realised that it all depends on the object's geometry. It turns out there's a lot of mathematics behind this seemingly simple task. This workshop will introduce students to an infamous problem in mathematics. We will work together to uncover some interesting concepts and how they relate to bigger real-life applications.

How To Be Fair (Year 7 - 8) - If you've ever tried to share a limited resource, like hot chips and chicken nuggets, you might know that it can be challenging at times, especially when people have different preferences. In this workshop, we will use mathematics to design fair sharing strategies.

Examine this special organ and be amazed at how this jelly-like structure is responsible for the way we work, think and behave. Note - this workshop uses real sheep brains. (Year 5 - 8)

Wobble, bang, dance, sing, rumble and cluck your way around a collection of fun physics sound activities! Discover more about how sound travels through different materials, amplification, pitch and volume. (Year 1 - 2)

Who stole the dinosaur eggs? Step back in time and help solve the crime using footprints, fibres and other clues the prehistoric thief has left behind. (Year 3 - 6)

Explore the useful material that is paper. Experiment with paper across different areas of science and make your own recycled paper to take home. (Year 1 - 4)
