Overview

In this unit, students develop the skills and knowledge required to teach Literacy and the Arts in early childhood. Throughout the unit students will develop an understanding of creative pedagogies that support children self-expression, imagination and creativity. They will investigate how children literacy and language can be developed through stories and dramatic dimensions and how the Arts contributes to the learning in the lives of children. The application of multiple methods of communication to create meaning will be undertaken. Students will also undertake professional experience for 10 days with children aged 0-2 years in an approved early childhood setting.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Examine historical and pedagogical contexts of creative arts curriculum
  • Investigate Literacy and language development through stories and dramatic dimensions
  • Critique pedagogical principles that support young children’s sensory, intellectual and aesthetic development and creative expression
  • Plan and deliver a range of learning experiences that foster Literacy learning, language development, creativity, imagination, self-expression and the aesthetic awareness of children through offering opportunities that take account of interests and skills
  • Develop and evaluate appropriate and enjoyable music, dance, visual arts and drama experiences that enable children to build confidence and gain knowledge and skills in these areas
  • Evaluate teaching and children’s learning experiences of literacy and arts creative pedagogies
