Overview

This unit aims to provide students with the knowledge and analytical skills necessary to understand the structure and dynamics of airline markets, evaluate air travel demand, and apply strategic planning tools to develop and assess airline networks. Students will explore different airline business models and gain insights into how airlines identify market opportunities and plan profitable routes.

Unit learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  1. Explain the key drivers of air travel demand and how they influence airline planning and performance
  2. Compare and contrast major airline business models, including full-service network carriers and low-cost carriers
  3. Assess the characteristics of different air transport markets and identify potential opportunities for airline entry or expansion
  4. Evaluate market structures and competitive dynamics in the airline industry
  5. Apply route evaluation techniques to assess the viability and performance of current and proposed airline routes
  6. Conduct basic network analysis to understand the strategic implications of hub operations, network design and connectivity, including regional access for remote and indigenous communities
