General Information

Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching (Higher Education) is designed for people working in higher education teaching or associated roles, and those aspiring to such roles. The course purpose is underpinned by authentic learning and learning experiences, and incorporates innovative and flexible approaches in contemporary tertiary teaching environments that draw from a diverse range of global environments and students. Participants will become practiced in creative approaches to curriculum design and delivery, including digital technologies and any combination of on-campus, blended, and fully online modes. The course structure is designed to support participants in progressively evidencing their capabilities through a portfolio, and in facilitating a sustained professional community committed to scholarly and reflective approaches.

Study structure

Successful completion of the Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching (Higher Education) requires students to complete units of study to the value of 50 credit points. All units of study are valued at 12.5 credit points unless otherwise stated.

  • Part-time study: 50 credit points/four standard units of study per year

  • One credit point is equivalent to one hour of study per week per semester (including contact hours and private study)

Aims and objectives

  • Evaluate pedagogical models and frameworks and their applications in designing for learning within the context of diverse student cohorts and global environments
  • Design and facilitate learning environments, inclusive of activities and assessment tasks, that support and enhance learning
  • Apply a scholarly and reflective approach to enhancing practice, effecting evidence-informed change, and being a member of a community of practitioners and scholars
  • Design, develop, and deliver curriculum in on-campus, blended, and fully-online modes

Career opportunities

The course provides academic staff, employed in universities, with the ability to evidence their capabilities in teaching at the higher education level and assists them to demonstrate their capacity to meet teaching criteria when applying for vacancies or making an application for promotion.

The course enhances the student learning experience by transforming teaching approaches, practice and innovation through the use of technology and design. It addresses innovative and flexible ways of learning and teaching in contemporary tertiary learning environments, and contributes to a professional culture of scholarship through the use and promotion of research.

Professional recognition

The Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching (Higher Education) is a recognised award under the Australian Qualifications Framework. Professional recognition is not required for teaching in higher education.

Course rules

This course is available to local students and off-shore international students who are studying in a country other than Australia.

This course is not available to on-shore international students on a student visa.

This course is taken part-time across one (1) year.
