The Matthew Wong Scholarship, proudly funded by The PS Matthew Wong Legacy Trust, has been established to honour Matthew Wong’s memory by helping students overcome barriers to education. This scholarship supports young individuals who face educational disadvantage yet show resilience, compassion, and a strong sense of purpose in using their education to contribute meaningfully to society.

The scholarship is available to one student commencing their studies in Semester 1, 2026.

This scholarship is valued at up to $22,500 with $7,500 paid annually for up to three years.


Courses eligible

An undergraduate (single or double degree) course offered by Swinburne University of Technology in any of the following disciplines:

  • Education and Teaching
  • Healthcare and Medical Sciences
  • Social Work, Community Services, and Psychology
  • Law
  • Science and Technology
  • Engineering
  • Information Technology

Eligibility / selection criteria

To be eligible for the Matthew Wong Scholarship, proudly funded by The PS Matthew Wong Legacy Trust, applicants must:

    1. Meet the following criteria:
      • Australian citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or Australian Permanent Resident with Humanitarian visa
    2. Meet the following enrolment criteria:
      • be a commencing first year Swinburne student in Semester 1, 2026
      • enrolled full-time in an eligible course (see courses eligible in section above)
      • studying on-campus
    3. Provide evidence of educational disadvantage, which may fall under the categories listed below. To assist you, we’ve included a link to the VTAC website for further guidance on preparing your evidence.

      Personal information and location
      Financial hardship
      Living with a disability or medical condition
      Difficult family and life circumstances
       
    4. Submit a personal Statement of 500 words or a 2 minute video addressing:
      • how you demonstrate the qualities of resilience, compassion, or a clear sense of purpose in your education and future goals
      • commitment to the community (e.g. volunteering, sports coaching, community services)
      • how this Matthew Wong Scholarship, proudly funded by The PS Matthew Wong Legacy Trust, would make a difference in your life
         
      • Upload your video to cloud based storage (google drive/one drive/drop box) and provide the link in a MS Word or PDF document. Ensure the video is downloadable by anyone and not access restricted
    5. Provide a written reference from a teacher, community leader, or employer.
      Note: referees cannot be a family member or friend.

    Value

    The scholarship is valued at $7,500 per annum, for up to three years, paid bi-annually.
