Course rules

To qualify for the Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) (Honours), students must complete a total of 400 credit points comprising of:

  • Twelve [12] Core Units of Study (150 credit points)
  • 16 units of study from the Mechanical Engineering Major (200 credit points)
  • 4 units of Other studies comprising of a minor, advanced minor or electives
  • Professional Experience in Engineering (Compulsory no-credit unit)
  • Students also have an opportunity to undertake a WIL Professional Placement in lieu of Professional Experience in Engineering

Students may not complete more than 150 credit points (normally 12 units) at Introductory Level. A unit of study can only be counted once, where units are shared between majors and/or minors, students must choose an approved alternate.

Professional Placements (Optional)

Professional Placements are subject to a competitive selection process. International students may be required to change courses in order to complete a placement and should consider visa and extended study duration prior to applying.

Students who undertake a 12 month professional placement are subject to the following course rules and must complete 475 credit points comprising:

  • 12 Core units of study (150 credit points)
  • 16 units of study from the Mechanical Engineering Major (200 credit points)
  • 4 units of study from the Professional Placement Co-Major (100 credit points)
  • 2 elective units of study (25 credit points)

Students who elect to undertake a 6 month professional placement are subject to the following course rules and must complete 425 credit points comprising:

  • 12 Core units of study (150 credit points)
  • 16 units of study from the Mechanical Engineering Major (200 credit points)
  • 2 units of study from the Professional Placement Minor (50 credit points)
  • 2 elective units of study (25 credit points)

Honours merit calculation
Honours merit calculation will be based on the averaged results of 12 units in the final two years of the course with the following descriptive outcomes:

  • BEng (Mechanical) (Hons) with High Distinction; for students who achieve ≥ 80
  • BEng (Mechanical) (Hons) with Distinction; for students who achieve 70 – 79
  • BEng (Mechanical) (Hons) with Credit; for students who achieve 60 – 69
  • BEng (Mechanical) (Hons); for students who achieve < 60

Students who transfer with advanced standing are required to undertake at least 9 of the following units at Swinburne, including all 6 outcome units, to qualify for an honours merit calculation. This honours merit calculation will be based only on units completed at Swinburne. If a student has not completed at least 9 of the specified units, they will graduate with a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) (Honours) as an award title, but not be eligible for a merit based honours description.

The following units will be used in the Honours merit calculation:

  • MEE30001 Materials and Manufacturing
  • MEE30002 Control Engineering
  • MEE30003 Machine Design
  • MME30001 Engineering Management 1
  • MEE30004 Solid Mechanics
  • MEE40001 Engineering Management 2
  • MME40001 Thermodynamics 2 *
  • MEE40002  Mechanical Systems Design *
  • MEE40003 Machine Dynamics 2 *
  • MEE40004 Fluid Mechanics 2 *
  • MEE40008 Final Year Research Project 1 (Mech) *
  • MEE40009 Final Year Research Project 2 (Mech) *
