The Graduate Diploma of Early Childhood Teaching prepares you to follow your passions in nurturing children’s learning and development in their early years (birth to 5 years).

As a pre-service teacher, you’ll learn how to create engaging and supportive learning environments.

You’ll deepen your knowledge of the early childhood curriculum and develop essential communication skills to collaborate effectively with children, their families and community across a diverse range of early childhood settings.

Course description

The course supports pre-service teachers to become effective and high quality early childhood teachers to work with children aged birth to 5 years. They will gain skills in supporting children's learning and development, a range of pedagogical approaches, working with families, professionals and the community and understandings the professional conduct of working as an early childhood teacher. Pre-service teachers will complete 60 days of professional experience as part of the course.

International students in Australia who hold student visas are required to study full-time and on campus. Courses that are taught entirely online are only available to international students studying outside Australia or those in Australia who are not on a student visa. Online courses are not available to international students in Australia who hold a student visa.

Course structure

To qualify for the award of Graduate Diploma of Early Childhood Teaching, students must complete 100 credit points comprising:

Four core units (25 credit points each for a total of 100 credit points)
60 days of supervised professional experience

Maximum Academic Credit

Academic credit cannot be granted for prior study.

Pre-service teachers who complete this course will be eligible to work as an early childhood teacher with children aged birth to 5 years.

Aims and objectives

On successful completion of this programme the learner will be able to:

Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning within a range of early childhood contexts, with a comprehensive knowledge of early childhood curriculum and frameworks within the Australian context.
Monitor and assess children's learning and development outcomes and use clear communication to report outcomes to families and communities through critically analysing, consolidating and synthesising assessment information.
Implement a range of pedagogical approaches to support the learning and development of children aged birth to 5 years.
Apply knowledge and skills to create supportive, safe and engaging learning environments with an ability to critically analyse information in diverse early childhood settings.
Apply a deep knowledge of the early childhood profession that is informed by critical thinking and synthesis of theoretical and practical knowledge, and informed by ongoing professional learning.
Collaborate respectfully with families and children, colleagues and other professionals to achieve high outcomes for all children aged birth to 5 years.

Qualification requirements

Students must have successfully completed one of the following:

A Bachelor degree (or equivalent) in any discipline or

A graded Australian Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care (or recognised ungraded equivalent) and a minimum of 5 years relevant work experience (undertaken within the last 7 years), in an early childhood education setting with related leadership responsibilities.

Working with children check

All enrolled students must maintain a current Working with Children Check (from the appropriate State Authority).

IELTS (Academic Module): Overall 6.5 with no individual band below 6.0
Swinburne English Language Centre: EAP 5 Advanced level with overall 70% and all skills 65% or above
