Held at Swinburne’s Croydon campus on 28 August, the WorldSkills Melbourne East Regionals featured five competing teams showcasing their skills across five trades.
Doing Landscape Construction, you get to learn all the skills like carpentry, plumbing, turf and bricklaying. You’re like a Jack of all trades. Hopefully, I’ll own my own business after TAFE.

After channelling his love of the outdoors into a Certificate III of Landscape Construction, Trent Mahoney went on to complete his apprenticeship at Avoca Landscape Construction, and was recently named Apprentice of the Year at the Landscaping Victoria Industry Awards!

Course description
In the Certificate III in Landscape Construction, students undertake theory and practical tasks in their learning of basic landscape construction skills. The landscaping industry expects this qualification to be achieved to meet job outcomes at this level.
Course structure
The course will be a combination of online learning and face-to-face classes which will be delivered in skill specific clusters. This qualification has been structured to allow participants to advance to higher levels with credit.

Aims and objectives
Students build skills to help them find employment within the landscape industry. Both construction and plant units are taught, providing both theory and practical experiences. Live projects will be undertaken during vocational education, workplace and industry project involvement. Industry specialist teachers are used to support off-the-job training, ensuring relevance of training.
Graduate skills
Students will understand the concept of planning, preparing worksite, and conducting works using a range of materials. Emphasis on occupational health and safety, environmental concerns, sustainable practices, quality control and industry standards are all attributes which students will be expected to achieve.

Tim Broderick teaches the Certificate III in Landscape Construction — a diverse course covering everything from paving to concreting, building retaining walls to timber structures, brickwork to stonework, machinery excavation and much more.
