Course description
The Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology is designed to qualify graduates for employment opportunities at para professional level in a range of engineering, manufacturing and related industries roles.
This course is delivered in a combination of engaging face-to-face classes, workshops, tutorials, lectures and online activities. Students learn advanced technology applications, robotics, mechanics, automation using PLCs and microcontrollers, electronics and instrumentation, fluid power controlled engineering systems, computer aided design, and advanced manufacturing technologies. Students go beyond the classroom and participate in industry projects and practical workshops.
Swinburne also offers this qualification with specialisation in Civil Engineering Design or in Mechanical Engineering Design.

Graduates may find employment in manufacturing and assembly plants as a manager or supervisor. Employment may be sought in a mechatronics and robotics design industry as a mechatronics engineering technician where associate engineer skill is required to provide support to professional engineers. Graduates may also work as technical officer, systems technician, and drafting technician.

Graduate skills
Graduates of the Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology (Mechatronic Engineering Design) should be able to:
- recall and apply engineering and scientific principles in designing mechatronics and manufacturing engineering applications based on a well-founded specialist knowledge domain
- analyse, diagnose, design and execute judgments with respect to mechatronics and manufacturing solutions that have a basis in engineering technology
- prepare a brief on technical solutions and concepts with options for various engineering environments and contexts
- integrate and solve interfacing problems between disparate technical or engineering systems
- manage complex projects on time and within budget
- manage autonomously a range of technical objectives within organisations that have outputs based on engineering application.
Professional recognition
This advanced diploma program is designed to produce graduates who have the skills and knowledge expected of Engineering Associate. Graduates are eligible to apply for membership of Engineers Australia at Engineering Associate level.
