The Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural) introduces students to the concept of good building design and its pivotal role in creating a new residential, industrial or commercial building.

In this course, you’ll go beyond simply drawing a set of plans – create your own building project using the latest in 3D virtual and construction technology. You will gain specialist skills in design, learn how to produce a set of quality plans that can be used to construct a building, become familiar with 2D and 3D software and develop business management skills.

This course is recognised by the Victorian Building Authority as the educational requirement to become a drafting practitioner.

Course description

This course covers building theory and practice related to residential, industrial and commercial buildings. Students gain specialist skills and knowledge in design, problem-solving, construction technology, full project documentation, computer-aided drafting (CAD/Revit) and project administration. This course satisfies the licensing requirement to become a drafting practitioner in addition to two years practical experience.

Course structure

Students are required to complete the 20 core units listed below. There are no electives. Face-to-face and online delivery.

Career opportunities

Graduates of the Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural) can work for building designers, draftspersons, builders, architects and other design professionals. Graduates can apply to register as a building practitioner and practice as a sole practitioner after a period of industry experience and registration by the Victorian Building Authority. Students may also apply to the Bachelor of Design (Architecture) with credit.

Aims and objectives

Students will gain the skills to interpret plans and specifications to produce working drawings, problem solve solutions to develop well resolved design outcomes, develop and coordinate architectural project documentation and work with the National Construction Code and other relevant legislation. Students will gain specialised knowledge of structural and construction technology, applications required in architectural workflows and apply the principles of sustainability and safety to building design.

Graduate skills

Graduates will be able to generate ideas through the application of design principles and theories; produce 2D and 3D drawings in accordance with industry best practice and to a level suitable for building permit approval; and communicate and clarify complex structures and layouts when presenting graphic design solutions to key stakeholders. Students use the latest virtual reality tools and software to present their designs and have their work published in a graduate handbook.

Professional recognition

Graduates meet the academic requirements to register with the BDAV (Building Designers Association of Victoria).
