About Sam

Clarity after self-discovery

After a tumultuous period, Sam returns to school and discovers his passion for youth advocacy.

New destinations

Sam represents Swinburne internationally in a team, develops real-world solutions and secures the win.

Gratitude and optimism

Sam acknowledges the support of his mentors and embarks on a double degree in business and law.

Igniting a passion for advocacy

Sam left school at a young age – battling mental health issues and substance abuse. After receiving support through the Youth Support and Advocacy Services via rehabilitation and other programs, he developed a passion for giving back to others in a similar situation.

Returning to study, Sam completed his secondary schooling through a community school, where a teacher introduced him to law. Fostering Sam's potential, his teacher provided guidance and mentoring – igniting Sam's passion for advocacy and rights.

Feeling that he was on the right path, Sam immersed himself in extracurricular activities. He volunteered and participated in the Youth Voice in Parliament on young people's mental health. He also commenced the Certificate IV in Business at Swinburne after passing Year 12 with an aim of moving into business law.

Exploring international opportunities

Among Sam's various voluntary roles while studying, he has served as an executive member of the Beta Alpha Psi honour society – working with other members to organise networking and professional development events. His work and study have opened the doors to international opportunities, including travel to New Zealand and the United States several times.

Another highlight was Sam's role as a representative for Swinburne's Run With It project, where he attended the annual conference in Buffalo, North Carolina. Supported by international organisations, students were given the opportunity to create meaningful change by developing solutions to real-world problems for a selected charity.

Sam was part of a team of three tackling the issue of homelessness in Florida – supporting the Salvation Army. Teams were given access to confidential data to develop a plan over three days and present to a panel of judges. Sam presented on behalf of his team, and they went on to win – something he describes as incredibly rewarding.

Setting an outlook on law

Sam's future looks bright. He has since commenced the Bachelor of Laws / Bachelor of Business (majoring in Accounting) at Swinburne. His enthusiasm and drive show no sign of slowing down. Sam's goals include becoming an attorney in corporate litigation, and he is open to the possibility of becoming a judge or barrister.

"My biggest lesson has been not to let my doubts or imposter syndrome limit me. I am so grateful for the incredible minds I have had the privilege to work with, and for the teaching staff who have mentored me along the way, so that I can succeed."
