Associate Professor Kai Qin

Program Leader, Data analytics

Associate Professor Kai Qin has rich expertise in machine learning (particularly deep learning), optimisation (particularly evolutionary optimisation), intelligent data analytics (including image, text and time-series data), computer vision, remote sensing, GPU computing and services computing.

Kai is an internationally recognized expert in computational intelligence, well-known for his contributions to the research area of collaborative learning and optimisation which studies the synergy of machine learning and optimisation techniques with applications to solve challenging real-world problems. As a Senior Member of the  Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), he is currently co-chairing the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (CIS) Task Forces on “Collaborative Learning and Optimisation” and “Multitask Learning and Multitask Optimisation”, and also serving as the Vice-Chair of the IEEE CIS Technical Committee on Neural Networks.

Kai is currently leading the Machine Learning and Intelligent Optimization Research Group, directing Swinburne’s Intelligent Data Analytics Lab, and also serving as the Course Director of Swinburne’s Master of Data Science Program. Before joining Swinburne, Kai worked at Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), the University of Waterloo (Canada), INRIA Grenoble Rhône-Alpes (France), and RMIT University.
