The National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) will transition from Swinburne University of Technology to the Australian College of the Arts (Collarts), as part of a new agreement that secures the future of circus arts in Australia.

Swinburne has worked closely with Collarts and the Australian Government over the past year to ensure the continuation and long-term stability of the world-class centre of excellence.

Pro-Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive, Vocational Education and Training Madelyn Bolch said the outcome is a win for staff, students and industry.

“We are proud to be a part of NICA’s long and esteemed history. The transition to Collarts is a logical next step in NICA’s journey and secures the continued strength of circus arts in Australia under Collarts’ expert guidance.”

“We acknowledge the continued support of the Australian Government’s Office for the Arts in ensuring NICA has the support it needs to thrive. The transition also allows Swinburne to focus on areas where we are a global leader, like digital technology, space, health and sustainability,” Ms Bolch said.

“We look forward to this new era for NICA and the opportunities it will bring for its students. I want to thank NICA’s staff for their unwavering passion for their students and the arts, as we worked through this process.”

Collarts Chief Executive Officer, Sam Jacob, said NICA has found its forever home at one of Australia’s best creative arts schools.

NICA is a national not-for-profit arts training institute and registered cultural organisation, primarily funded by the Australian Government.

Applications and auditions for NICA’s Bachelor of Circus Arts for 2025 will resume immediately while the formal completion of the transfer is underway.
