Swinburne ranks in the top 400 of Academic Ranking of World Universities

Swinburne has ranked in the top 301-400 of the world’s best universities, according to the highly-regarded Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

Placed at 386^th overall, this ranking positions Swinburne in the top three per cent of universities worldwide. 

This year, Swinburne has been ranked highly by a number of prestigious world rankings organisations.

The QS World University Rankings ranked Swinburne in the top 400 universities globally, improving its position in by 34 places to 387^th.

Swinburne also debuted in the top 50 of the QS rankings for the world’s top universities under the age of 50, positioned at 45^th.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development), Professor Aleksandar Subic, says this excellent ARWU ranking demonstrates Swinburne’s strong focus on producing high-quality research and innovation outcomes that create social and economic impact.

“Our research strategy is focused on establishing world-class research concentrations across the university, which have capacity for sustained success at an international level,” Professor Subic says.

“Our research delivers real impact that transforms industries, improves lives and shapes communities through our deep engagement with industry, business and society.”

Swinburne’s researchers continue to make impactful discoveries that are changing the landscape of various disciplines such as health, astronomy and engineering.

Some of Swinburne’s recent internationally-recognised research achievements include:

• The launch of an Australian-first cloud-based Industrial Internet of Things operating system, MindSphere, in collaboration with Swinburne’s partner and global technology giant, Siemens
• The development of novel stem-cell technology that will provide the ‘ink’ needed for the BioPen, a handheld 3D printer designed to allow surgeons to ‘draw’ new cells onto injuries with stem cell ink
• The creation of a blockchain technology platform to revolutionise the global art trade industry in partnership with ArtChain Global
• The development of a world-first, self-fitting hearing aid with rechargeable battery and the ability to be set via a smartphone

The ARWU ranks universities on several indicators of academic or research performance, including quality of education, research output and per capita performance.
