Village cinemas teams with Swinburne for Unscene film festival

Now in its third year, Village Cinemas’ Unscene short film competition is once again seeking to discover Melbourne’s most talented aspiring filmmakers.

Partnering with Swinburne University of Technology and AAMI, Village Cinemas is calling for entries for emerging filmmakers to produce a short film inspired by this year’s theme; ‘Choices’.

Reflecting on the first two Unscene competitions, Marketing Manager of Village Cinemas, Nic Robin says the calibre of the entries is always overwhelming.

“The first two years exceeded our expectations with the level of enthusiasm and quality of short films that were submitted, and we have no doubt that this year will again top that.” Mr Robin says.

Films will be shortlisted through online voting at unscenefilms.com.au before they are showcased in a professional gala setting that will see the winner receive a cash prize of A$10,000 and filming equipment from Blackmagic, one of the world’s leading innovators and manufacturers of creative video technology.

“We started Unscene because we’re passionate about film. We want to see more Australian content on our screens, but we recognise that it is hard for young filmmakers to get their foot in the door. This festival is our way to give back to the community, and hopefully encourage the next George Miller or Gillian Armstrong to keep honing their craft,” Mr Robin says.

Swinburne lecturer Dr Vincent Giarrusso is excited to bring the university’s experience in film and television to the competition.

“Swinburne has a long history of helping aspiring filmmakers develop their skills and achieve exceptional results. We’re excited to continue this tradition and will continue to encourage entrants all over the country. To see your work on the big screen as a young film maker is an experience that can’t be beat,” says Dr Giarrusso. 

Prizes include $2000 for second place and $1000 for third place, alongside additional Blackmagic technology and the opportunity for the short film to play in select Village Cinemas foyers.

Village Cinemas is seeking short films up to five minutes in length that are original, creative and compelling. Any aspiring filmmaker, amateur or student can apply as long as they are over the age of 18.

Entries open on Monday 2 July, and will close of Wednesday 17 October, 2018, in preparation for the awards and gala event at Village Cinemas Rivoli on 6 December 2018.
